Level 3 Certificate for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry (Fast-Track) (RQF)

Description

This Course is a EXCLUSIVELY available to UK Government Trained Tier 1 Close Protection Operatives in order to acquire the SIA Close Protection Licence

This Specialist Conversion Course enables the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to be initiated, providing an exemption from mandatory training for those with relevant UK Government Tier 1 Close Protection Qualifications & Experience.

WHO IS A UK GOVERNMENT TIER 1 CLOSE PROTECTION OPERATIVE?

Completion of one of the following courses with Indicative and Relevant Occupational Experience: 

• Royal Military Police Close Protection Course (RMP CPU)
• UKSF (Special Air Service Regiment) Bodyguard Course 
• Metropolitan Police (RaSP) Close Protection Course 
• Police National Protection Officers Courses (NPOC) (including PSNI)
  

WHAT IS RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)?

RPL is a process which recognises that some of the learning that can contribute to the award of the Close Protection Qualification has already taken place. The approach is that wherever and whenever the experience occurred, the evidence of the learning must be proven. It enables the recognition of achievement resulting from a range of activities using valid assessment methodology. 

For this recognition to be acceptable to the Awarding Organisations and regulatory authorities evidence must be:

• Authentic: clearly relates to the learner’s own efforts e.g. original certificates
• Current: within the last 3 years
• Relevant: the evidence, which must comprise of more than prior experience, needs to correspond to the SIA approved qualifications for licensing
• Sufficient: is everything covered in enough detail that you can be confident in your decision

DURATION

The course is run "blended", with 11-12 Hours of E-Learning (Home Self-Study) and 5 Days of Face-to-Face Classroom Sessions

As of 01 April 2022, the Full Level 3 Close Protection course has increased to 18 days to include the additional training requirements set out by the SIA, including the compulsory modules around working as a Door Supervisor and Physical Intervention for both Close Protection Operatives and Door Supervisors.

This 5 Fast-Track/Conversion Course has been implemented to align existing Tier 1 Government Trained Close Protection Operators onto the SIA Close Protection Licence framework with the transferable modules of training.

Unit 1: Principles of Working as a Close Protection Operative in the Private Security Industry

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of a close protection operative
• Understand current law and legislation within a close protection context
• Understand the importance of threat and risk assessment
• Understand the importance of threat and risk management
• Understand personal and professional skills within a close protection environment
• Understand the importance of teamwork within a close protection environment
• Understand surveillance, anti-surveillance and counter-surveillance methods
• Understand search procedures within a close protection operation for people, vehicles and buildings/venues
• Understand close protection foot drills
• Understand venue security operations and requirements
• Understand the importance of planning, route selection and additional licence considerations
• Understand reconnaissance within a close protection environment
• Understand the importance of operational planning

Unit 2: Working as a Close Protection Operative in the Private Security Industry 

• Undertake a dynamic risk assessment
• Demonstrate use of surveillance, anti-surveillance and counter surveillance
• Be able to search people, vehicles and venues
• Demonstrate close protection foot drills
• Be able to demonstrate venue security skills
• Be able to manage transport arrangements within a close protection environment
• Be able to prepare and carry out a close protection assignment
• Be able to deal with a range of incidents within a close protection environment

Unit 3: Application of Conflict Management in the Private Security Industry 

• Understand the principles of conflict management appropriate to the role
• Understand how to recognise, assess and reduce risk in conflict situations
• Understand the use of problem-solving techniques when resolving conflict
• Be able to communicate to de-escalate conflict

Unit 4: Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry

• Identify the different threat levels
• Recognise the common terror attack methods
• Recognise the actions to take in the event of a terror threat
• Identify the procedures for dealing with suspicious items
• Identify behaviours that could indicate suspicious activity
• Identify how to respond to suspicious behaviour

Unit 5: Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry

• Understand how to keep vulnerable people safe
• Understand licensing law relevant to the role of a door supervisor
• Understand queue management and venue capacity responsibilities relevant to a door supervisor

Unit 6: Application of Physical Intervention Skills for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry 

• Understand the requirements of providing clear and concise instructions to the principal and team members in emergency situations
• Know how to respond to a change in operational conditions from standard operating procedures (SOP) to emergency operating procedures (EOP)
• Know the responsibilities of the close protection team when there is an immediate physical threat to the principal
• Understand the necessity for narrowing the concentric layers of protection when managing an immediate threat to the principal
• Understand the implications of common and criminal law when using force on another person
• Know the positive alternatives to using physical intervention skills in a close protection environment
• Understand associated threats as a result of an attempted assault or unwarranted attention towards a principal
• Know how to apply physical intervention skills in a justifiable, ethical, and professional manner
• Be able to use non-pain compliant soft skills to prevent harm to a principal
• Be able to use defensive non-pain compliant skills to protect self from assault
• Be able to use non-pain compliant methods of protecting the inner cordon
• Be able to protect the principal from assault
• Be able to communicate effectively to encourage de-escalation 

Unit 7: Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry

• Understand physical interventions and the implications of their use
• Understand the risks associated with using physical intervention
• Understand how to reduce the risks associated with physical intervention
• Be able to use physical skills to protect yourself and others
• Be able to use non-pain compliant standing, holding and escorting techniques

Prerequisites

You MUST hold a Verified & Accredited Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (FAW), First Response Emergency Care (FREC), First Person on Scene (FPOS) Qualification or equivalent, which must be achieved prior to the commencement of any security training and have at least 12 months remaining until expiry.
